What are your tips on memorizing? How do you do it?

For me I think I do it about like you (exept singing verses to nursery rimes) You know, read a section over a few times. Then read a little bit of that a few of times, first looking at the book then not. Then I go to the next part... And review a lot!

I guess I should answer my own question :-)
I memorize in many different ways. I always start by reading the chapter out loud several times. Sometimes I listen to it on tape. The most common memorization method I use is just repeating the verse outloud, with the reference. I've also tried using corresponding hand motions, which helped. The method that helps the most is singing. When I put a verse to song or say it with a rythm, I rarely forget it. Oh yes - and I have tried drawing out a chapter, but it didn't really help that much.
So, there is my very long answer as to my memorizing techniques. I look forward to hearing MORE techiniques that I can ad to my long list. :-)

Well, even though I've graduated this year, I can still put down how I USED to memorize, eh? I always said the reference, then read the verse aloud, then tried to repeat the verse without looking by trial and error until I could say it perfect. But every time I would quote it through, I'd accompany it with a reference. Like so: Hebrews chapter one, verse one. In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways. Hebrews chapter one, verse one... Et cetera. And then I'd move on the verse two, using the same method. After mastering that verse, I'd quote through verses one AND two, and move onto three. After that, I'd quote through one, two, and three. And so forth. I preferred to stand and pace as I quote and learned, occasionally counting items or main thoughts on my fingers, to aid in recollection up on stage. Also, whenever I'd quote a chapter, or significant portions of material, I would on occasion do so dramatically (particularly if it were a gospel!), including voices, in order to give what was in my mind some unity. Eh.

ok wow. ya memorizing is pretty hard for me, but half of it is because I memorize a chapter at a time. I found that when I memorize just verses at a time, I get them mixed up more. so ya last year I would read the chapter over out loud 4 or 5 times every morning and evening. within 2 weeks i can quote every verse in the chapter pretty much. and for verses, I don't usually find them a problem. I just remeber where each verse starts.
for matthew I am trying a totally different memorization technique. first, I am drawing little pictures in the sides, that correspond with the subject at hand (eg:, "then kings from the east followed a star to the place where Jesus was" and I would draw a little star or somehting). hopefully this will help me remember stuff, like "oh yeah...chapter 6 verse 7 is the one with the little angel beside it" or whatever.
to actually memorize the stuff I will probably do a combo of what I did last year, and what michelle said she does.

as a veteran, i have tried many many things, but the thing that works best for me.... i'll read the verse once, try to say it without looking the look at it, and repeat until i can say it perfectly. i don't worry about references, because i'm NOT a reference quizzers (i go for SFs and MAs). I pace my tiny room while I'm memorizing and always have Chopin on low (i don't know why, it seems to help me focus ) last year, my friend and I recorded ourselves reading Hebrews onto a CD and I would listen to it while I slept. I actually did retain a lot of it, even while I was sleeping. I answered questions at meets from chapters that I hadn't even READ before. No joke. but my best advice would be to do what is best for YOU. maybe repeating doesn't work that well for you. Maybe singing is your thing. Maybe pacing helps, maybe it doesn't. Mayby drawing pictures helps. Whatever works for YOU, DO IT! Don't let anyone tell you the BEST way to memorize, because everyone has their own individual ways to learn. Have fun!!
